O Adonai Minimize

O Adonai and leader of Israel, you appeared to Moses in a burning bush and you gave him the Law on Sinai.

O come and save us with your mighty power.

‘Adonai’ means ‘Lord’, and it is the word most commonly used in the Old Testament for God since the Jews would not write or pronounce the sacred name YHWH (Jahweh). The reference is clear – to Exodus chapter 3 (the burning bush) and Exodus chapter 19, verse 16 to chapter 20, verse 17 (the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai).

It is possible to relate to this Isaiah 11, 4-5. “With righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. He shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.” This same God who revealed himself to Moses reveals himself in Jesus Christ. We ask this ‘Leader of Israel’ to come and save us with his mighty power.

An Advent Prayer
(W. Barclay: Prayers for the Christian Year)

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness , and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
Amen.
