It is wonderful for us to be here Minimize

The Transfiguration, the subject of today’s gospel passage, marks an important stage in the journey of Jesus to Jerusalem.

This mysterious event, described – with different emphases – by Matthew, Mark and Luke, was intended to help three of Christ’s closest friends face up to what they would see on the hill outside Jerusalem when the “Lord of glory” would be the “Man of sorrows.” It was a foretaste of the “glory that is his as the only Son of the Father.” That glory, however, was to be hidden for the most part during the earthly life of Jesus; we catch only glimpses of it in the gospels.

In our own lives, there are times when we experience something like perfect or near-perfect happiness, moments we want to hang on to, when we want to say “It is wonderful for us to be here.” But we cannot, in this life, hang on to these experiences for ever; we have to continue on our journey. But the calling to mind of such experiences can give us hope for the future especially when life is hard.

This Week Minimize

Think about it:

List some of the wonderful experiences in your life that give you strength when the going gets tough. Why do they give you strength?

Listen to it:

Read the gospel passage aloud to yourself and try to put yourself into the picture it tells.

Talk about it:

Share with family or friends some of the wonderful experiences you have had; and try to see how these are a reflection of the goodness and the glory of God.

Learn from it:

Choose one or two of these wonderful experiences and use them as an occasion to give thanks and praise to God.

Pray about it:

Lord, thank you for the good things that have happened in my life. Help me to see them as signs of your love. Amen.
