We are witnesses to all this Minimize

At the heart of Christian faith is the knowledge that Jesus of Nazareth, who died on the Cross, came back to life and still lives. It was on the basis of this conviction, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, that Peter and the other apostles (see today’s First Reading) were able to resist pressure of various kinds to deny that Jesus is alive.

This conviction would enable them to face torture and even death rather than give up their faith. The same conviction has inspired millions of men and women over the last two thousand years to imitate, however imperfectly at times, the total self-giving practised by Jesus Himself.   Saint John, in his First Letter, speaks about the kind of life God wants us to live. He writes: “[God’s] commandments are these: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and that we love one another as he told us to.” Believing in God, and in his Son, must lead to action. Faith must never remain sterile. By living out our faith, we lead others to Jesus, and that is what we are called to do.

This week Minimize

Think about it:

Someone once wrote: “If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”

Listen to it:

Re-read, slowly, the gospel passage, and try – in particular - to understand the character of Peter.

Talk about it:

Discuss with a fellow-Christian practical ways of being a follower of Christ in our world which is indifferent or hostile to Christ and what he stands for.

Learn from it:

Not to give up hope even when the going is tough.

Pray about it:

“To the One who is sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honour, glory and power, for ever and ever.” Amen.
