Sixth Sunday of Easter Minimize

In the gospel passage of today’s Mass, Jesus is trying to prepare his followers for the time when he will no longer be with them in the flesh. He gives them his ‘peace.’   This is another way of saying that he is giving them himself, for he is the One who reconciles the fallen human race with God.

He also reconciles human beings with each other, breaking down the barriers between Jew and Gentile, male and female, etc. and building bridges instead. For us to be able to receive that peace it is necessary that we do all in our power to live according to the law of selfless love, as Jesus himself did. We are constantly invited to search for ways in which we can reach out in love to others who differ from us – as the First Reading tells us the earliest Christians learned to do.

This week Minimize

Think about it:

Christ urges us not to be “troubled or afraid.” Yet we sometimes are. Why is this so?

Listen to it:

Read slowly the passage from the Apocalypse, and see if you can detect any useful or inspiring image in it.

Talk about it:

With reference to the First Reading, talk over with someone anything that causes friction in your own parish community, and think of ways in which you might help to overcome it.

Learn from it:

To see things in perspective, as the early Christians had to – see the First Reading.

Pray about it:

The Psalm of today’s Mass would make an ideal prayer.
