The great beginning of the Church

What an extraordinary way to begin a worldwide organisation! A group of men crowded into an upstairs room; hurricane force wind; what seemed like tongues of fire coming down and resting on each of them. Then these men go out and preach, in a way that all the hearers can understand, about the marvels of God.

From the tiny seed sown in Jerusalem, the Christian gospel quickly spread, via modern Syria, Turkey and Greece, as far as Rome.

The thrilling account of this spreading of the Good News can be found in the Acts of the Apostles. But it didn’t stop at Rome: quite soon it was carried to the outposts of the Roman Empire and to the limits of the then known world.

Over the last two thousand years, there have been many ups and not a few downs in the story of the Christian Church. At times it has seemed that the Church could not survive. Persecution from without, dissensions and sinfulness within have threatened the very existence of Christ’s Mystical Body. Yet the power driving this Body is none other than the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. This power can never fail. “I will be with you always,” Jesus told his followers just before his Ascension, “to the end of the age.” The Church is currently under attack; but it will survive these attacks because Christ will never leave it to its own devices. His Holy Spirit, whose coming we celebrate at Pentecost, is for all followers of Christ, a source of joy and of hope.
