I am going to prepare a place for you

“Christ has passed beyond our sight not to abandon us but to be our hope.” The disciples were distraught at the thought of losing their Master a second time. They had seen him put to death on the Cross; and their hopes had been dashed to pieces. Not surprisingly, they took some convincing that he had risen from death. Hardly had they got used to this than he was taken away from them again.

They had not seen him during the days he was in the tomb; and now they were not to see him again, at least for a very long time. Yet Saint Luke tells us that after Jesus withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven “they worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy.”   A strange reaction. Were the disciples glad to be rid of their Master?

The reason for their joy was that Jesus had promised he would send them the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit would help them continue the work he had begun. When they had completed that work, he, Jesus, would return to take them with him. They believed that promise, and their faith was to be strengthened when the Holy Spirit came. In that strengthened faith, in the power of the Holy Spirit, they went out and proclaimed – in words and by their deeds – that where Jesus had gone, they hoped to follow.

This week Minimize

Think about it:

How would you have felt if you had stood on the outskirts of Bethany along with the disciples and watched Jesus ascending to heaven?

Listen to it:

What is the First Reading saying to you as you re-read it today?

Talk about it:

In the circumstances in which the Catholic Church finds itself at the present time, talk over with someone you trust reasons for joy.

Learn from it:

To find space in your daily life for prayer (“looking into the sky”).

Pray about it:

Lord Jesus, even though we cannot see you, we know that you are still with us.
